Working to safeguard your property (Part 3)

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

In this last post on the subject we will be considering a few more things that a homeowner can do to protect his or her property and ward off the threat posed by burglars.

As there have been a number of reported instances recently where thieves have been targeting sliding glass patio doors to gain entry to a house, a secondary blocking device can give you extra peace of mind. This can be achieved by placing a wooden stick into the track, which prevents or limits how much it can be moved.

When fitting new windows or doors, it is important that you only get products which have been certified to current standards.

Neighbourhood watch schemes can be very good at ensuring that people living in a particular area keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious. As well as this you could have a word with your adjacent neighbours and try to agree on watching out for one another’s homes.

In addition to the security lighting you can install on your property, a burglar alarm is something you should seriously consider. It is also necessary to keep it well maintained to ensure it is working at its optimum.

If you bear all these things in mind, you will be able to do so in the knowledge you have done all you can to look after your home.

Working to safeguard your property (Part 2)

Monday, March 28th, 2011

In the last article we looked at how burglars will always choose the easiest option when selecting a property for a break-in. Many thieves are opportunist criminals and will be keeping an eye out for homes which are not properly protected. We will now be going through some other ways a person can safeguard their house and the valuables stored within it.

It has become quite a common practice for people to try and hide a spare key under their mat, behind a car wheel or in a flowerpot assuming that this is a safe place to keep them. This could not be further than the truth however as these are usually the first places a thief will look. Instead, you could always leave a spare set with one of your neighbours.

When someone approaches your property, if they have something to hide then a bright, beaming light switching on would not be something they would welcome. This is why the installation of security lights would deter any sneaky thief looking to stay in the shadows.

These security systems can really work to stop burglars targeting your home in the first place and by always keeping these suggestions in mind, you can really minimise the risk of a break-in.

Working to safeguard your property (Part 1)

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Although it is impossible to completely remove the threat of danger when it comes to the security of the home, there are a number of things you can do to significantly reduce this risk to your family and the possessions you own.

As well as an effective home security system there are other ways you can put off any would-be burglar who is looking for an easy target in your area. As criminals basically want to carry out the theft undetected, they will search for homes with the least security measures in place.

Just consider the outside of your property for a moment. Do you have any ladders or equipment lying around that could aid a burglar in gaining entry into your house? Another point to consider is that a high proportion of intruders break in to a home through a back window, so make sure that all downstairs windows, and those which can be easily accessed upstairs, are fitted with locks.

With regards to the valuables in your home, you should mark them with an ultra-violet pen so that should they be stolen and later recovered, the police can trace them back to you.

In the next article we will be looking at other precautions you can consider in order to ward off thieves from breaking into your home.

Police in Merton launch operation to combat rise in house burglaries

Friday, March 25th, 2011

It has been revealed that a new initiative is now underway in Merton, a borough of London, to target the recent increase in crime where burglars have been breaking into a number of homes.

Thieves have been gaining access to the properties by way of their sliding patio doors, which have been forced open.

‘Operation Wellington: Give Burglars the Boot’ has been in action since last Monday when Merton police described how they will be going about tackling this recent spate of breaking and entering incidents in the area.

As burglars have been breaking in to these residencies by targeting the rear of the building, Merton police have issued a warning about how home security can be improved.

Detective Sergeant Theresa Foster, of the Burglary and Robbery Investigation Team (BRIT), said:

“If you have a sliding patio door, don’t just rely on the central lock supplied – why not fit extra security locks to the top and bottoms of the opening section of the patio door, and check your door has an anti-lifting device.

“If the glass isn’t laminated, fit an appropriate window film which does the job. All these items are easily available from any DIY store for a few pounds, and might help bring your house insurance costs down.”

Pensioner takes matters into her own hands

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Two young burglars got more than they bargained for when they attempted to rob an old woman while she was present in her home.

The court was told how 79-year-old Joan Parmenter was watching television at the time when the incident happened.

She was alerted to a number of loud bangs coming from the front of the property and upon investigation found the two brothers, Luke and Lee Clay, standing in her front room.

The pensioner was hit on the head by Luke but struck back by landing a punch on the assailant’s jaw.

The intruders, who were under the influence of alcohol at the time, were so taken aback that they fled the house and didn’t see notice an oncoming vehicle on the road.

Sophie Buckthorpe, the driver of the car, managed to call the police as the burglars ran away. They were both later caught and sentenced to eight months each in jail for burglary. A further four months was added to Luke’s term on account of common assault.

While Miss Parmenter’s actions were certainly commendable, it is worth looking into preventing this kind of thing from happening in the first place. These days there are a number of affordable home security solutions to minimise the threat posed to you and your property.

Police advise Croydon locals over scam involving burglar alarms

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Residents in the town of Croydon have recently been warned by police to be wary of a scam where burglars have been making calls claiming to offer the fitting of free or cheap priced burglar alarms.

These criminals have been impersonating officers in their attempts to gain access to people’s homes.

They have done this by calling residents to arrange for someone to visit their homes and fit the burglar alarm.

Detective Inspector Clare Mullenger offered advice to those living in the Croydon area when she said:

“If in doubt, call us to check, but in general I would advise all residents to not answer the door to cold callers, check I.D and credentials carefully and call the organisation they claim to be from even if they claim to be police.”

The police have also stressed the need for anyone expecting a visit to make sure they have a relative or friend present, even when an appointment has been made beforehand.

Burglary Squad officers have been working with the Older Persons Forum to ensure the elderly get all available information of crime prevention passed on to them.

Make sure that if you are ordering a burglar alarm, you only do so from reputable organisations with the right credentials to carry out security installations in your home.

Would you like to benefit from a free site survey and risk assessment?

Friday, March 18th, 2011

No matter whether you are a residential or commercial property owner, you can now arrange for an expert surveyor to come round and aid you in choosing the most appropriate security system for your individual needs.

If you have a house, flat, bungalow or cottage, you will know that not all security features offered by the majority of burglar alarms and home security systems are right for you. This is where having a site survey done can make a real difference to your situation.

And for businesses it is just as important to get building security right, whether this is in the form of office, retail or warehouse premises.

It won’t take long to arrange for a surveyor to visit, you can either do this online or over the phone.

For those who require a system to be installed as soon as possible, there is an express service available, where your chosen home / business alarm, CCTV or door entry system can be ready to go live within just a week from receiving confirmation of the order.

So, whatever you feel would benefit your circumstances, why not book in a free site survey today and be sure about your security investment?

Leigh burglar jailed after stealing from the elderly

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

A 30-year-old who admitted carrying out burglaries at three properties owned by pensioners in Leigh last October has been jailed for over six years.

Felix Rooney was handed the sentence at Liverpool Crown Court this week.

The burglar, who was arrested for stealing a Vauxhall Insignia, had stolen cash and vouchers from three homes during the same morning.

The first victim was an 89-year-old woman who lived on Grasmere Street, Norley Hall, with the criminal gaining access to her home by claiming to be an official from the water board.

An 83-year-old woman was the next person to be duped by Mr Rooney at her property on Walmesley Road, Leigh, an hour and a half later.

Not long after that, Mr Rooney stole money from a 78-year-old woman who lived on Belmont Avenue, Bickershaw.

Detective Sergeant Graham Clare said:

“Rooney is an unscrupulous thief who did not think twice about conning his way into the home of elderly women, who he thought of as easy pickings, and stealing from them.

“The victims all thought Rooney was helping them and feel all the more aggrieved at his deception.

“I have no doubt his crime spree would have continued had he not been stopped that same day and I am pleased he has been jailed and can no longer target some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”

Hike in number of Hertsmere burglaries

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Statistics presented to councillors at a meeting in the Hertfordshire borough of Hertsmere this week showed that there had been a rapid rise in burglaries over the past year.

The crime figures suggested that thefts from homes and dwellings had risen by over 23 percent, despite only a slight increase in the overall crime rate (at one and a half percent).

Chief Inspector of the police force Sue Jameson revealed the findings to the Resources Scrutiny Committee.

She later spoke about the burglary incidents and how the police have tackled crime in Borehamwood when she said:

“We’ve had a number of burglaries that are linked together, that we believe have been committed by the same people.

“As a result of that we have done a lot of work using our intelligence systems to drive some proactive work.

“Following that, we made three arrests, which has seen a noticeable drop. The challenge now is to sustain this current low level of activity.”

Burglaries are a problem for many communities up and down the country, so wherever you live it is necessary to consider your home security by installing such things as burglar alarms and monitoring systems to ward off criminals from attempting to break into your property.

The various features of commercial alarm systems

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Commercial alarm systems are an important investment for any firm as they can give you complete peace of mind that the protection of your business is being taken care of. There are plenty of benefits to installing the latest equipment on your premises. Some of these are described below.

24 hour alarm monitoring

For the constant monitoring of your business, this is the best security decision you will make. Should the alarm ever be activated then you will be informed straight away.

Key-holder response

Upon activation of the alarm system, your premises will be contacted to determine if it is a false alarm or not. The key-holders will be notified of the situation.

Police response

If the alarm activation is the result of an intruder attempting to break into your business premises, then the police will be called directly. This allows for a swift response from the police and means you won’t have to spend time trying to get in contact with them yourself.

Regular inspections of the alarm system

Another key benefit of having such an alarm system installed by the security experts means that the equipment will be checked bi-annually to ensure it is working correctly. This is all part of the service and any problems found as a result of wear and tear will be fixed at no cost to your company.
